2010 Year in Review

January
We spent a lot of time indoors to avoid the frigid winter temperatures. Faith
is enjoying playing PlayStation 3 with her adaptable controller.
February
Talking to Rob's parents on the computer during the USA vs. Canada hockey
preliminary game during the Winter Olympics. The USA beat Canada in a huge upset! Also in February we celebrated mine and Rob's birthdays.
March
Faith was busy at school in March. She went to Sylvan Learning Center for a
Dr. Suess event, went to Mandan for AgDay and also had a school program.

April

Part of our Easter celebration included Faith flying a
kite for the first time! In April, we also participated once again
in the Great American Bike Race with Faith's team,
Faith's Fantastic Ten.

May
If you look closely, you can see that Faith lost her first tooth! Also in May,
Faith treated her me to a Mother's Day Spa in her classroom and she went bowling with her class on one of their last days of Kindergarten.

June
One of Faith's favorite summer activities is walking down by the river.
In June Faith also started summer school called Camp Edventure.
 July
Our trip to Regina, Saskatchewan. Faith's favorite part of the
whole trip was going swimming in the hotel pool!

August
Another favorite summertime activity for Faith is going to the zoo.
Also in August, my little girl somehow became a first grader!

September

Faith gets an iPAD! She is also doing better than we expected attending
school full days. We also made the decision to give her a break from all therapies outside of school.

October

Faith celebrates her 7th birthday with friends at one of
her favorite places - Papa's Pumpkin Patch!

November

Stirring cookie dough instead of going stir crazy as November proves to
be a very cold, snowy month.

December
Faith and her family had a great year in 2010 and are expecting
more great things and many blessings in 2011. We pray you
and your family has a blessed New Year as well!

Tuesday Tidbits

Christmas is over. The joyous holiday ends once again, just as it does every year. And now we will all try to catch up a little before celebrating the start of a New Year.

The holidays continue the day after Christmas in Canada with Boxing Day. So on Boxing Day we tried to communicate via Internet with Rob's parents and sister. Unfortunately, Skype no longer works for us, which we aren't sure why, so we resorted to using Yahoo Messenger. It wasn't as good as Skype but it did the trick. We got to see Grandmother and Grandfather, Auntie Johanna and even Joh's new cat, Ruby. When we asked Faith if she liked Ruby, she answered very honestly, "No I don't like that cat." We think she is partial to Joh's other cat, Lucy, whom Faith has actually met in person.

Talking to Auntie Joh
Also on Sunday, Rob had fun putting Faith's Toy Story 3 Train set together. Yes, I did say Rob had fun. Faith had only mild interest. She would rather play her new card game with her mom. If you look at the picture of the completed train, you will notice the blue train tracks. These tracks did not come with the Lego train set. In fact, no tracks came with the train set! Thankfully Rob still has his Lego tracks for the train set he had when he was a kid! I really had my doubts this new Toy Story train would be drivable on these old tracks, but it worked!

Building the Toy Story 3 Lego train set

Yesterday, Rob had to go back to work and Faith and I had a visit from my sister Tesa, her husband and two boys. As soon as the kids saw Faith's Toy Story toys, they were all over them! They had a nice pit stop on their way from Pierre, South Dakota where they started out that morning to Watford City. They plan to go home to Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday the 2nd, all in one shot. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for them!

Faith is still not yet fully over her sickness. This morning she was coughing and still sounding very congested. She also has a slight fever of 99.2. I called the doctor today to see if I need to take her in again. She is already on day seven of her antibiotic. I just thought she would be more recovered than she is at this stage. I'm still waiting for the doctor's office to call me back. I'm hoping her pediatrician will call me this evening, which he sometimes does. If not, I suppose I can try again tomorrow.

We are supposed to be getting a big storm this week with 12 inches of snow. If it's true, I guess we'll just hunker down as we always do and wait for the New Year to arrive!

Merry Christmas Daddy and Faith!

This stocking was a gift from one of Faith's aides at school.
It came as a kit so that Faith could create her own stocking.
Isn't it adorable?

It wouldn't be Christmas without our Happy Birthday Jesus Cupcakes!

Sick Days

This week has been quite the week with Faith missing three days of school due to being sick. She started getting sick on Sunday and didn't sleep well at all that night so I kept her home on Monday. Tuesday she actually seemed to be getting better and I was hopeful about her going to school on Wednesday so she take take part in all of the pre-Christmas festivities at school. But Tuesday night was a horrible night for sleep and we both ended up sleeping until 11 the next morning to catch up.

Yesterday I finally took her to the doctor and here she has not only a sinus infection but an ear infection as well. Poor girl! So of course now I am kicking myself for not taking her in sooner. The the thing with Faith though is that even though she is sick, she doesn't act sick. She's still smiley, still laughing and yelling, still her cheery self. If I had a sinus infection and an ear infection, Lord knows I would be anything but cheery! And even when she just has a simple cold, she doesn't sleep well. But Tuesday night I knew something was wrong when she not only didn't sleep well but she cried a lot throughout the night.

It was kind of cute when we did go to the doctor. She was actually excited about going. She thought she was going to see Dr. Ocejo though, whom she just loves but we couldn't get in with him so we had to go to the walk-in clinic. We told her it was going to be a surprise who we got to see.

We got in fairly quickly and the nurse who took our info was actually one of the nurses who helped take care of her in the NICU. She seemed glad to see how much Faith had grown and how well she was doing. After the nurse took her temp and turned to her computer to input the information, Faith beat her to the punch by asking, "Any medications?" The nurse laughed and said, "Wow, she knows the drill!"

Later, a very subdued, very laid-back Dr. walked in and the first thing he said to her in a very monotonous voice was, "Hi, Faith. I'm not as exciting as Dr. Ocejo." Boy was that the truth! Dr. Ocejo usually laughed with Faith, joked around with her, tickled her, even head-butted her but not this guy! He was the anti-Dr. Ocejo! Faith still seemed to like him though., especially after he complimented her on how well she spoke.

After we received our diagnoses and got our prescription for antibiotics, we ventured down to Pediatric Therapy and got to hand out a few Christmas cards to the receptionists and a few of Faith's therapists. We also had a nice talk with our friend, Jacey. If anyone can turn a Dr. appointment into a fun thing, it's Faith!

After we got home, Faith wanted to play on her computer keyboard so she could pretend to be a nurse and put in my information. She asked, "What's your first name? Can you spell that? And your phone number?" She would make a great receptionist one day!

So, our getting ready for Christmas has been on hold for this week and I guess we'll see how Faith feels these next couple of days before deciding to do things like going to church and going to a friends house for Christmas dinner.

As of right now, I'm having a nice, relaxing time catching up on my blog and other writing while respite care is here to take care of her. I'm listening to my new Susan Boyle "The Gift" Christmas CD. It's really good and has many of my all-time favorites, including Do You Hear What I Hear, The First Noel, O Holy Night and Away in a Manger.

The Gift

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Some Progress

We recently received Faith's report card of sorts called, "Annual Goals, Short-Term Objectives, and Periodic Review of Services." Which basically lets us know how Faith is doing with her therapies and special education/academics at school. These are the goals that we set up for her at the beginning of the year when we did her Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Getting ready for school
I was so happy to see that in each area, she is making "some progress." In Occupational Therapy, they have been working on self-feeding. This has been a challenge for her as it involves fine motor skills. She does have some high tone in her arms so she has to work through that in order to bring the spoon directly to her mouth. Her therapist in this ares says that Faith does fatigue during this exercise but that she is really motivated to work hard.

One of our goals is for Faith to begin to read. I am so proud of her that she knows all of her letter sounds and at school they are trying to get her to recognize her first set of sight words. Faith is more auditory than visual so one thing they are doing to help her learn to read is to mount a laptop computer to her chair. The computer has all of the reading materials that her class uses which enables her to not only see the text but to hear it as well. She is then able to push her buttons to turn the pages on her own.

Another area she is working on is physical therapy which involves walking in her gait trainer and also driving her power chair. Her goal is to drive from her classroom up to the gym in as fast as time as possible, with the least amount of stops. There are a few times she has gone the whole distance without any stops! Another improvement she has made is that she no longer just drives around in circles!

Besides all of these activities, she also has speech, time in her stander, computer lab, library, music, and time in her classroom. What a busy little girl she is! No wonder she doesn't want to do anything or go anywhere when she gets home!
I am so thankful for all of the help that Faith receives at school and that each person there is doing their best to help Faith reach her fullest potential. Both Rob and I are so proud of her!

Field Trip

Today Faith got to take a field trip to the Belle Mehus Auditorium to enjoy "Singing in the Season" put on by the Central Dakota Children's Choir.

It worked perfectly to drive Rob to work then go to the auditorium to wait for her class. I was a little unprepared for the number of kids there were in attendance - every first grader in the Bismarck/Mandan area got to go on this field trip! After we met up with Faith's class, we sat in the beautiful auditorium and enjoyed the concert.

Faith was a little nervous when the lights were turned down and during all of the applause but all in all I think it was a very good experience for her.

Tuesday Tidbits: BURR, Bison Football and A Visit from Grandpa

The cold weather this past weekend pretty much kept us indoors. I would have loved to take Faith out to do some shopping but with her being all bundled up and her current growth spurt, it makes it harder to transfer her out of her chair into her seating system in our car. Oh how I am praying for a van by next winter!

On Saturday Faith and I watched the exciting but heartbreaking NDSU football game as they played Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals for their NCAA division. It was a great game and Faith had fun laughing at me as I yelled, cheered, jumped and danced. Every time I got excited she yelled, "Did you win yet mommy?"

Unfortunately no, I didn't win as the Bison lost in overtime. Oh well! They had a great season, one in which they weren't expected to get so far.

NDSU during one of the many highlights of the game
We did manage to get the rest of our Christmas decorating done, which includes our little Christmas tree that has survived the last five years or so. We also achieved our major goal of getting our gifts and cards sent off to Canada so that they arrive by Christmas Day. Usually we are late as I don't get in the mood for cards and gifts until mid-December!

Our cute little Christmas tree
On Sunday, we had a great family day as we hooked up Faith's buttons to the PlayStation 3 and played Wheel of Fortune! It was so much fun and I can see an improvement in Faith knowing what buttons to push and when to push them. She's great at spinning the wheel and she loves to buy vowels!

That evening, Grandpa Mike showed up bearing lots of gifts! He joined us for supper and of course we heard lots of stories about all the oilfield activity in Western North Dakota. He said many of the workers that had come here from the south left because of the winter weather. They are very short-handed and the people who do work and stay to work end up working very long days. Dad had just worked a 17-hour day in his truck the day before driving down to Bismarck.

We had a great visit, although Faith and Grandpa had to compete for talking time! The next morning, I got to join dad and my aunt Gail for breakfast at Perkins so it was fun to catch up with her as well.

Faith and Grandpa enjoying some bonding time
Have a blessed week everyone and be sure to stay warm!

Tuesday Tidbits

We've been waking up to some beautiful scenery with the frosted trees

Because of the snow storms last week, we had a few rough days of getting Faith to school and back. Thankfully, my friend Tina was able to help out with her van and also one of our neighbors, who also has kids at Centennial, was able to push Faith up the hill one day. Rob and I both think that maybe it's time to get Faith on the bus. I thought it would be easy enough, since the bus goes right by here every day and that all I would have to do is make a phone call and it would happen just like that. Not so fast, I learned!

On Friday, I had a meeting with Faith's special education teacher and she explained that to get Faith on the bus, her IEP team would have to meet and decide that because Faith doesn't have the necessary transportation to get to school, she will have to be picked up by the bus. Even after all parties agree that Faith needs to take the bus, it is not guaranteed that the bus will come right to our door to get her. Which makes no sense to me, since it is often our parking lot and sidewalk that is the hardest to get Faith through.

Also on Friday, I attended a meeting where Faith's instructional aides were getting trained to help Faith use her buttons to operate a laptop computer which is eventually going to be mounted on her chair at school. All of the reading tools that Faith's class uses are going to be downloaded onto her computer, which will be another way of helping her learn to read. It was fun to see the excitement in Faith's face when getting to use her buttons to operate the computer!

Joining us in that training session were two University of Mary students as part of a mentor program for those wanting to work in some way with special needs children. One of them is an occupational therapy major and the other is studying social work. It is a wonderful program that allows students to get a first-hand look at some of the challenges and the joys that are involved in having a special needs child.

Also last Friday, despite the storm that dumped about six inches of snow on us, we had our CP Support Group Christmas dinner at China Star. Rob came in late as he had to drive from Selfridge, South Dakota in the crummy weather. At the restaurant, we got a nice surprise that our friend, Susan who works at China Star, has moved back to Bismarck from Indiana! Faith will be so happy to see her!

Over the weekend, Faith and I got out the Christmas decorations and started to decorate. While decorating, we played the CD I made a couple of years ago that Rob titled, Cari Jean's Essential Christmas Songs. Faith thought many of the songs on the CD were too sad and she wanted to listen to her favorites over and over again - Feliz Navidad and Jingle Bells.

The Jingle Bells on the CD is a swing version by Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. When Faith was smaller, I would have her in my arms and dance around the room with her while listening to that song. I even did some swing moves with her where I swung her to the left side of me, then to the right, than between my legs. There is no way I can do that now! But we were being silly and singing and "dancing" to the song and then she yelled, "You Rock Mommy!" And every once in a while throughout the song she would yell, "Break it down now!" and I would yell back, "Hit it Faith!" We had so much fun!

Another high note from the weekend was that the NDSU Bison Football Team beat Montana State and will be traveling to play Eastern Washington next weekend in the quarterfinals for the NCAA subdivision! The game is going to be aired on KFYR and a few other stations in North Dakota and also on ESPN. LET'S GO BISON!

Just Ducky

Faith has the sweetest, kindest, most generous instructional aides EVER! Recently, the school's 6th graders held their annual rummage sale. I of course forgot to send money along for Faith to buy something so her aides took it upon themselves to buy something for her.

During the winter, I normally put these little pink booties on over Faith's orthotics to keep her feet warm, but this year they were pretty tight and hard to get on. The booties are soft and have Velcro on the sides so they were easy to get on her feet even over her orthotics. I can't find any boots like that anywhere and it's impossible to get regular boots on over her orthotics. Well, thankfully her aides found the perfect solution to keep her little feet warm this winter!

Her new slippers are just ducky!

Everyone gets a real kick out of Faith's duck slippers!

The Great Frosting Challenge

Despite all the great food we had over our nice, relaxing Thanksgiving, Faith and I felt the need today to bake a cake. And since we didn't have any store-bought frosting, I decided it would be so much fun to make our own homemade frosting. I looked on the Internet for a simple recipe and found the perfect one, or so I thought.

After Faith and I popped our cake into the oven, we prepared to make the frosting. I asked her what color the frosting should be.

"BLUE!"

The cream cheese frosting recipe called for three cups of  sugar. The problems began when I tried to mix the sugar with the cream cheese, water and vanilla extract the recipe had also called for. No matter how much stirring or mixing I did, it didn't turn creamy like it was supposed to. Instead, it looked like a big lump of mashed potatoes with lots and lots of sugar.
My very first attempt at homemade frosting
Faith soon got bored and decided she would like to do something else. I ran to the Internet to try to figure out what I was doing wrong. I realized the recipe called for confectioner's sugar which unbeknownst to me was not the same as the regular sugar, or granulated sugar, as I had used.

Since I had no confectioner's sugar or powdered sugar lying around, I found another frosting recipe that didn't need confectioner's sugar. As I read the reviews of the frosting from people who had made it, a few complained it turned out lumpy and a few had trouble with the consistency. I was bound and determined to get this cake frosted by the end of the night so I decided to go for it.

I asked Faith if she wanted to make some different frosting but I think she had had enough baking for the day. This buttercream frosting as it was called, was a little tricky as you had to cook part of it then mix it in with the creamed butter and sugar. It was a little on the lumpy side and it wasn't as thick as I would have liked but it still tasted okay so I added the blue food coloring and frosted the cake anyway.

If you haven't already guessed, I am not a baker. I'd much rather cook! But someday, if and when I ever have confectioner's sugar, I'd like to take another shot at the cream cheese frosting just to see if I can do it. And if it still doesn't turn out, I'll stick to store-bought frosting! In the meantime, all you inexperienced bakers, please beware that confectioner's sugar is not the same as regular sugar!

Our little cake topped with blue buttercream frosting
By the way, Happy Birthday to my brother-in-law, Don! If you were here, you could have a piece of our beautiful blue cake with our homemade buttercream frosting!

Bundle Up!

Fifteen below zero - that was the temperature this morning in Bismarck when I walked Faith to school. And you know, without the wind blowing, it didn't seem all that bad! Nevertheless, I really bundled Faith up so she would stay nice and warm on our 3-minute trek to school. I actually think she enjoys these little adventures! And as long as the sidewalks are clear, I don't mind them either.

Some Good News and My Magic Mocha

Despite mine and Faith's major lack of sleep this past couple of days due to her bad cold, which became progressively worse on Wednesday night, we are relieved and happy because of the good news we recently received. In my last blog, I asked for prayers for Faith as she was going to be getting her hip x-rays taken. Just a day later we received a phone call saying that there has been "no significant change" in her left hip. Her last x-ray had been taken in May so in six months the hip has not come any further out of its socket. Thank You Lord, for answering our prayers!

Faith has stayed home these past couple of days due to her cold which I think is turning into a sinus infection so we picked up some antibiotics today. Hopefully she'll recover 100% by Monday so she can make it to school all three days next week. I haven't minded staying indoors as the temperature has gotten steadily colder. I don't think it even hit 20 degrees today.

With the onset of winter, I thought I would share one of my favorite drinks - I call it My Magic Mocha. Hope it helps you stay warm!

I use an extra large mug that holds about 12 oz for this mocha.

My Magic Mocha
Make two cups of coffee.

Spoon your favorite hot chocolate into a large mug
(measure how much hot chocolate that you would use with two cups of water.)

Poor the coffee into the mug so it's nearly full. Stir.

Add half and half or milk. Stir.

Add whip cream.

Drizzle chocolate syrup over the whip cream.

Enjoy!

Tuesday Tidbits

I must say, after the long weekend, I am feeling a bit guilty. We didn't have too much going on so we mainly stayed indoors and I let Faith watch way too many videos. When Sunday finally rolled around, she was bored and a bit cranky. Before having kids, I always told myself I would not be one of those moms who lets the TV babysit their kids. Things sure turn out differently when you actually have kids!

When Faith comes home from school, that is all she feels like doing. She is so tired from her long day, which not only includes classroom time but also working hard with her special education teacher, driving her power chair and any other therapies she might have for the day. By the time she gets home, she is spent. I don' feel as guilty letting her watch so many videos after school but over the Thanksgiving long weekend, I am going to try hard to limit her video-watching time and find other things for us to do.

Last Friday I took her to the doctor because her nose had been sort of stuffy for the last two weeks. Personally, I think its because all four of her molars coming in at the same time. But I've never known a pediatrician to say that teeth issues are the cause of anything but a little bit of discomfort. She ended up getting the flu mist and now she has a full blown cold. So now I'm wondering if she's reacting to the flue mist or if she caught a bug at the doctor's office or what. He did give us a prescription when we were there for some antibiotics in case her cold symptoms worsened into a fever, coughing, etc. Hopefully though, she'll be just fine and we won't need to fill it. Thankfully, she slept well last night despite her cold.

Before her appointment, we had time to go to pediatric therapy to visit one of the receptionists and we also saw her physical therapist, Jackie. She was so excited to hear how well Faith is driving her power chair at school! It was great to see her but she agreed we had made the right decision by taking Faith out of therapy at Medcenter to focus on things at school.

Tomorrow we're going to be getting Faith's hips x-rayed. We are really praying there hasn't been a lot of change in her left hip, which is starting to come out of its socket due to her high muscle tone pulling it out of place. If her hip looks worse than what her last x-ray showed, we will probably have to consider getting the baclofen pump sooner rather than later. I'm really nervous about getting the pump which is a device that allows medicine to be injected into her spine to help relax her muscles.

Until The Whole World HearsOther than all of that, I just listened to the newest Casting Crowns CD, Until the Whole World Hears. If you like worship music, I highly recommend getting this one!

Have a blessed week and please continue to keep Faith in your prayers.

Cookies!

One of Faith's favorite things to do is bake cookies. She really likes to surprise her dad with a plateful of cookies when he is home working in the office, which is exactly what we had fun doing yesterday.

Faith mixes up the batter while wearing her new, colorful apron.

Who can resist licking the spoon?

Yummy cookies!
Let's have one then bring them back to daddy!

Church Cheers

Admittedly, it has been tough to find the right church that works for our family. We have tried several in the Bismarck-Mandan area with each of them having their own pros and cons. And a pro for one person in our family can be a con for another. Take the praise and worship time, for instance. The louder and more exciting the better, for me anyways but not for Faith.

With her CP, Faith has something called a "startle reflex." It's something newborns have but they grow out of it. When a newborn baby is startled their whole body reacts with arms flailing and legs going because they can't control those movements yet. For Faith, she has never been able to control those movements. It used to be that when she startled many times in a short period she would get very upset and would start to cry.

Another issue she has is if she is somewhere loud and dark with the noise varying at different levels, she is very tense the whole time and her muscles just can't relax. Places like movie theaters are an example. And as we found out, charismatic church services are another example. One minute the pastor may be very quiet but then suddenly becomes very loud - this will cause Faith to startle. She'll be tense the whole time because she doesn't know when she will be surprised again.

Finding a church where Faith can relax and not be so tense has been a bit challenging, especially for me who really likes those very charismatic church services. Rob on the other hand can pretty much go to any church and be okay with it, as long as he is free to take part in communion and gets something out of the message.

At some churches we would try to sit in various spots - like the back row, sitting way back in the corner, sitting outside in the lobby area or sitting in the coffee shop. While sitting in these certain areas may have helped alleviate some of Faith's startling, it felt to us that we weren't really a part of the service or the fellowship.

After years of searching we have found a church for the three of us. Rob's friend from work invited us to their Saturday evening service at a church called Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. The evening service is less traditional, the music more contemporary and Faith really seems to enjoy being there. We can sit way up front and not have to worry about Faith getting nervous or tense.

Another thing we discoverd is that some friends of ours from the CP support group go there as well. Faith really gets a kick out of their 21-year-old son, who is in a wheelchair too.

This past Saturday was interesting and I sort of held my breath when the pastor announced what we were going to doing. He had a message on confession and forgiveness. He explained that there are four promises of forgiveness - for each promise, his wife had thought of a cheer for all of us to yell. One side of the room would yell the first line of the cheer and the other side would yell the second line. I did not know how Faith was going to react. Rob and I both looked at her and I quickly explained to her there was going to be a lot of yelling.

The pastor read the first promise of forgiveness: I promise I will think good thoughts about you and do good for you.

Then we yelled out the cheer: THINK GOOD THOUGHTS! DO GOOD THINGS!

Faith tensed up a little but she didn't startle. Instead, she began to laugh.

Promise: I promise I will not bring up this situation to use against you.

Cheer: DIGGING UP DIRT...IS NOT GOOD WORK!

Faith continues to laugh.

Promise: I promise I will not talk to others about what you did.

Cheer: G-O-S-S-I-P...GOSSIP IS MISERY!

More laughter.

Promise: I will be friends with you again.

Cheer: FRIENDS RESTORED...IN THE LORD!

After the last cheer, we had to try to get Faith to stop laughing and continue to listen to the pastor. After we visited for a little while, Faith said on the way home, "I had so much fun at church!"

It seems to me, we may have finally found a church home!

School Days

Faith is doing so well in school and I am just so proud of her! When I take her to school in the mornings, she arrives with excitement, practically bursting at the seams to say good morning to both of her aides. Then she'll briefly turn toward me, blow me a kiss and we part our separate ways. I have no worries, no fears, no concerns...I know she'll do great.

Then, after the morning and early afternoon has quickly passed, I return to school to get her and she greets me with a big smile, yelling out, "Mommy!" She's had a good day but she is ready to go home and relax. As I begin to push her home in her chair, she usually exclaims, "I had such a fun day at school today!" She then proceeds to tell me some of the things she has done which includes: calendar, reading, math, snack, driving her chair and any other special activities of the day. She also tells me about some of her friends who have helped her throughout the day. When she's done she'll say, "So how was your day mommy? What did you do?"

I love that she is talking so much about school and all that she is learning. When I hear all about her day, it gives me comfort knowing that we made the right decision to pull her out of her afternoon therapy sessions at Medcenter. I really believe she has added energy and she can put forth all of her efforts at school.

She is doing excellent with full days, five days a week - another decision that we know is right. It gives her more time to socialize with the other kids and participate in everything a full school day has to offer. She is not left out of anything. It's amazing to us that she has only missed a couple days of school so far. We pray this trend continues throughout the year.

I really like to hear from her aides things that she says or does throughout the day - like deciding that she wants to participate in snack time. If the snack looks good, she'll ask her aide if she can have some too. She can't eat everything that is brought to school, so if she wants a snack, they'll come up with something else, like her new favorite - gogurt. They are always so willing at the school to allow her to participate, try some new things and make sure all of her needs are met.

I really get a kick out of listening to Faith when she's home. She repeats a lot what is said in school. Like the time she was telling me a story and I turned my head away for a brief second and she asked, "Mommy are you being an active listener?" And when she wants to play a game she says, "Mommy are you going to buddy up with me?"

Last night she said she wanted to do math before she went to bed. Her math problem revolved around four ducks and after one duck was gone, how many were left. She did give the right answer but I believe her answer came from memory more than from figuring it out on her own. Which is fine because I believe she is starting to understand the concepts of math and reading and one day she will be able to understand and comprehend and figure them out instead of relying on her memory.

I remember as a little girl, going home and playing teacher with my sisters and how much fun we had. That's what Faith is reminding me of. She wants to come home and play school and I just love that! Words cannot express how proud I am of her. These school days are some of the most treasured days of all.

Tuesday Tidbits - Pumpkins, Presents, Parties

Phew! What a weekend! I'll try to give a recap of everything that has happened over the last three days.

Saturday we went to one of Faith's favorite places - Papa's Pumpkin Patch. It was the perfect way to celebrate her birthday and the fantastic Fall season we have had. It was about 50 degrees but still nice because there was no wind! Faith had a blast, especially with her friends, Chloe, Alivia and Barborka. She was very blessed with lots of wonderful gifts, especially lots of new pajamas which she really needed.

On Sunday Faith went to a friend's house for a Halloween Party. There were a total of about 25 kids all dressed up in very cute costumes such as Jesse and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, a few princesses, a butterfly, a pumpkin, a cowgirl, a monkey, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz and Faith went as Supergirl.

The highlight of the party was a blow-up haunted house that the girls would run through screaming at the top of their lungs. Faith didn't want to participate at first, but her friends talked her into it. I took her out of her chair and carried her, running through the house. Of course after the first time, she wanted to do it again and again. It was quite the workout for me!

Monday was Faith's birthday. She was so excited to go to school and pass out her treats and be the helper of the day. I had ordered cupcakes from Dan's and they looked so pretty with orange/white frosting adorned with fall leaves. At school she also got to do show and share. She chose to take her new stuffed puppy called a Webkinz where you can virtually take care of the puppy on the Internet.

After school she really didn't feel like going to Speech therapy but we forged ahead anyway. When she got there she was okay because she got to pass out cupcakes to everyone in the Pediatric Therapy Dept. We decided though that this would be her last speech therapy session at Medcenter for the year. After school she is just so tired. We will reevaluate all of her therapies in January to see about starting up again at Medcenter.

Last night when we finally got home from our busy day, Faith opened a few presents from her mom and dad. She got some toys from Toy Story 3 called Action Links. She and her dad had lots of fun with those. We also tried to SKYPE her grandparents in Canada but they were having technical difficulties on their end so we talked the old-fashioned way, by speaker phone!

All in all it has been a great three days but I'm glad we have nothing planned for next weekend! I'm also thankful the weather held up to take Faith to the Pumpkin Patch as this afternoon we will be in a blizzard warning! I guess it was inevitable.

Have a blessed week!
